..Sometimes, you have to cross the country for something truly extraordinary.
For us, it was ZZ Top at the historic Ryman Auditorium in Nashville—a once-in-a-lifetime experience that blended legendary music with the charm of a venue steeped in history.
From the moment we landed in Nashville, excitement buzzed through us like an electric guitar riff. We’d waited months for this trip, and as lifelong fans of ZZ Top, seeing them live was a bucket list event. But seeing them at the Ryman? That was the ultimate cherry on top—or maybe, in this case, the beard on Billy.
The Ryman Auditorium is a venue like no other. Known as the “Mother Church of Country Music,” the Ryman Auditorium is more than just a concert venue; it’s a shrine to music itself. Stepping inside, you’re surrounded by history—every seat feels like it has a story to tell.
Thankfully, our seats were fantastic. But then again, every seat at the Ryman is fantastic. With its intimate layout and acoustics, it’s impossible to have a bad view or miss a single note. It felt more like a local town hall party than a big-name concert, and that was much of the appeal.
When the lights dimmed and ZZ Top took the stage, the crowd erupted. They played all the hits—“Sharp Dressed Man,” “La Grange,” “Gimme All Your Lovin’”—and the energy was electric. It’s hard to believe they’ve been rocking stages for over five decades because they sounded as tight and fresh as ever. Their signature bluesy riffs and unmistakable style reminded us why they’re icons of rock and roll.
Sure, the audience was a little older, and the dancing a little less vigorous, but it was great to feel like a kid again with everyone else in the auditorium.
It’s been a while for me. I’ve seen them twice, both in their heyday at the top of their game. The El Loco-Motion tour in 1982 and the Afterburner tour in 1986. Both are highlights of my concert record (neatly tucked away in my Rock Logster app!).
Beyond the concert, our trip to Nashville was filled with musical magic.
We wandered down Broadway, where live music spills out of every honky-tonk and amplifies the city’s soul. From classic country to rock, to blues and everything in between, the energy on Broadway is infectious. It’s a music lover’s dream and the perfect prelude to a night at the Ryman. …and after.
We left the Ryman on a spirtual high and carried the feeling well into the night with some of our country’s most talented young performers.
Seeing ZZ Top at the Ryman was more than just a concert—it was an experience. The combination of their legendary music and the venue’s historic charm made it unforgettable. If you ever have the chance to see a legendary band perform at the Ryman Auditorium, don’t hesitate. Fly, drive, or hitchhike if you must—it’s worth every mile. …especially if you have dinner at Martin’s.
For us, this trip wasn’t just about the music; it was about being part of something special, something that can’t be recreated. ZZ Top at the Ryman wasn’t just a show; it was a memory we’ll cherish forever.
